| Some recently completed elven gryphons fly over some German WWII infantry. |
Per usual, I've been busy at the painting tray adding to both orc and elf armies, plus quite a few ACW rebel infantry units to get that army started. I still have the terrain setup from the fantasy battle, intending to have a WWII action across the same ground, but while the Germans have been deployed for weeks, the Americans are still in their storage boxes, apparently waiting for it to warm up.
The scenario will be a test of my modified Memoir '44 rules (Commands and Colors WWII). I tried a small scale action prior to this, but because the units typically represent a larger formation (sometimes a very large one), it didn't feel right. I decided to try another experiment, but this time changing things up a bit. Here are the highlights:
- Ranges for all units are doubled. So a 3-2-1 infantry unit will now be 3-3-2-2-1. Tanks that were 3-3-3 will now be 3-3-3-3-3-3. This should increase engagement ranges and not have units having to close to kissing distance before firing.
- Artillery will work as follows: Each battery gets its own range from its position OR a unit designated as having a radio/commander. So artillery is 3-3-2-2-1-1 starting from its hex OR the unit calling in the barrage. An infantry commander calling in an artillery strike on a German tank two hexes away would roll 3 dice for the effect of the barrage, even if the artillery unit is 20 hexes away. So range of guns is only limited by the LOS of friendly radio-equipped units.
- To keep the scale looking correct, tanks will be individual models that take three hits to knock out as opposed to three tanks that take one hit each.
- I use a lot more terrain on the board than a typical Memoir '44 game to limit LOS of all units. (I may consider expanding tank ranges to only limited by LOS, but not sure about that yet. With the right terrain, it will be limited anyway.)
- Germans can not use the airpower card (in this vs. US scenario anyway), but may treat it like a barrage card instead.
- Infantry may not attack tanks unless they have AT weapons. If they do not, then they may only attack tanks when adjacent.
- The grenade symbols on the dice only count as hits when adjacent to the target.
The range increase is really the biggest change to try to create more of a small scale action feel rather than the more abstract normal rules. Whenever I get around to playing, I will post the results here.
For painting, I really feel like I've completed a lot of my long-term army goals. My Napoleonics are mostly complete, save for the British, Spanish and Portuguese contingents. Let's be honest, when you can field several Baden units, you know you have a pretty deep collection.
Likewise, my fantasy armies are rounding into shape. The elves, orcs and two human factions from my campaigns are mostly down to bonus/special units. I have a basic set for WWII, which is an area I don't have a ton of interest in, and I can 3D print most vehicles I would need, so infantry is the only thing I'll possibly add to there. I already have a solid set of German, US and Russian infantry with some British paratroops to boot. I also have two good sized starship fleets for my Red Alert games.
For my ACW collection, I have completed the Union army save for four artillery batteries (and those figures should arrive in the mail any day now). The Confederates have their cavalry complete and a number of infantry units, with the rest on hand waiting for the brush. My goal is to have 25 infantry, 5 cavalry and 5 artillery for each side to start. Specific scenarios might call for a few additional units here or there, but I can add them as I go.
So goals for this year:
- Finish my ACW armies
- Finish my Sathar War space campaign that I started last year but only got about halfway through.
- Continue my fantasy campaign
- Play at least one Napoleonic game
Those are the big ones. I have plenty of 3D-printed terrain that's ready for painting, so that will keep me busy even if I temporarily run out of troops to paint.
Good gaming to all of you in 2021!
