Titanic 3D: Iceberg Lettuce

In this week's "Paul on Pop" segment for CBC Radio, I revisit James Cameron's Titanic—and I don't know if it was the 3D, or the shock of seeing Leonardo DiCaprio in his stick-thin 1997 prime, or having forgotten that Cameron throws in a lengthy Kate Winslet nude scene at around the halfway mark, just when the pace threatens to get a little poky, but I really fell in love with this movie in a way that I most certainly did not when I saw it during its original theatrical run. Cameron's dialogue is not terribly elegant (or accurate to the period), but dialogue is only one aspect of the art of screenwriting, and anyone who snidely refers to Cameron as a "terrible writer" is ignoring the superb, classical construction of this film, the refreshing lack of cynicism in the presentation of its central love story, and the way Cameron seems genuinely invested in Rose's escape from her stifling social role. Titanic is a pretty terrific movie, you guys!

One note: since I was going to be out of town on Monday, when the segment aired, I recorded it on Thursday morning, before the weekend box-office figures were in. To my great surprise, and contrary to my prediction of Titanic's moneymaking prospects, American Reunion wound up outgrossing Titanic during their opening weekends. Still, it'll be interesting to see which movie has longer legs—maybe Titanic will keep hanging around the box-office top ten the way it did back in ’97.
