Messi, Depay and Aguero are not registered to play for Barcelona yet
Barcelona have brought in Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia on free transfers so far this summer, while also paying £7.7million for Emerson Royal.
But reports claim the club can't register the quartet because they have exceeded LaLiga's salary limit.
And that's without adding Messi's salary to the equation, with the Argentine great currently a free agent having failed to sign a new contract extension at the Nou Camp.
According to Goal, Barcelona are looking to slash their wage bill and have reportedly agreed to sell first-team players Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho and Tottenham target Miralem Pjanic, who earn a combined total of £171m-per-year.
Elsewhere, left-back Junior Firpo is close to joining Leeds for around £12m and Francisco Trincao has been shipped out on loan to Wolves.
Garcia, another free transfer arrival from Man City, is not yet registered to play in LaLiga
Other exits include Konrad De La Fuente and Jean Claire-Tobido to Marseille and Nice, respectively.
Barcelona hope the clear-out will be enough to afford a new contract for Messi, who has been linked with moves to Man City and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.
